Space Station Drives 'Star Trek' Fiction Toward Reality: NASA Video

"Star Trek" shows a universe where people can warp out to nearby stars and visit many worlds that are similar to Earth. While humans in the real world are much more limited in their options for space travel, NASA said that the International Space Station (ISS) is paving the way for a future where humans can reach farther out into the universe.
Last Friday (July 22), the administration released a new video called "NASA: On The Edge of Forever," referring to the name of an episode of "Star Trek: The Original Series." The video was released on the same day that the newest installment to the Trek movie universe, "Star Trek Beyond," hit theaters across North America.
The video features interviews with several astronauts, NASA officials and "Star Trek" stars. They talk about how science fiction and science fact are becoming one on the orbiting laboratory. The space station, which was first launched in 1998, has been continuously inhabited since 2000. [Watch William Shatner Talk Science Fiction vs. Space Fact]
"For most of us, the thought of traveling to another galaxy probably seems like science fiction," NASA astronaut Victor Glover said in the video. Glover was selected in 2013 and hasn’t flown in space yet. "But the truth is, the foundation for humankind's journey beyond Earth's solar system is being laid right now aboard our very own International Space Station."

Experiments in microgravity (or weightlessness) are helping pave the way for human missions to Mars, and perhaps other space destinations, according to NASA.

"In the original 'Star Trek' TV series, space stations served as deep-space research laboratories, as well as rendezvous points where starships could dock before exploring the unknown," Glover said. "When we were envisioning our own space station, the applications were similar."
The real space station serves as a test bed for developing microgravity technologies (such as 3D printers and coffee machines), and astronaut health techniques (such as effective exercise regimes and growing fresh food). Currently, NASA is aiming for a human mission to Mars, which would require crews to spend more than a year in space — much farther away from the resources of Earth than crews on the space station — so these technologies will be even more crucial for keeping crew members happy and healthy.
Among the things that NASA has to account for when considering a human trip to Mars is the effect of microgravity (or weightlessness) on the human body. (The various crews of "Star Trek" had artificial gravity aboard the USS Enterprise, something that real-world space agencies haven't quite mastered yet.)
"When you remove the force of gravity from your body, you will lose things like muscle mass, bone density. Your heart doesn't have to work as hard," Jeanette Epps, an unflown member of the 2013 NASA astronaut class, said in the video. Another problem that arises from living in microgravity (though it is not brought up in the video) is vision changes from long-term stays in space that, in many cases, are permanent.
"But thanks to the International Space Station, we're able to study the effects of weightlessness and develop countermeasures in orbit, close to Earth," Glover said.
On average, astronauts spend roughly 90 minutes to 2 hours every day lifting weights or running on the treadmill to slow muscle and bone deterioration. To help with psychological health, NASA also gives astronauts regular free time and chats with loved ones by video. The long-term effects of life in space were recently put to the test when two station crewmembers, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko, both spent an entire year on board.

Modern space exploration may not look exactly like it does in "Star Trek," but many people feel that humans will inevitably push out to more and more distant locations in the universe.
"I think it's in our evolutionary creed that we have a manifest destiny to go into space and to find new worlds to live in," said "Star Trek" actor Walter Koenig (who played Pavel Chekov on the original series) in the video.
Added Epps: "So every step we take, we're just getting further and further into space and becoming more and more like 'Star Trek.'"

William Shatner Won't Return in Any New Star Trek Movies?

Producer J.J. Abrams reveals that fans will never see William Shatner's Captain Kirk in this new Star Trek timeline, and he explains why.

In just two short days, Star Trek Beyond will hit theaters, the third adventure since director J.J. Abrams rebooted the franchise with the 2009 movie, and the 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. Ever since this movie series was rebooted, a point of contention for many fans is that William Shatner, the original Captain Kirk from the groundbreaking Star Trek TV series, was never brought back for a cameo appearance, even though Leonard Nimoy has returned as Spock. During a new interview, producer J.J. Abrams revealed that fans will likely never see William Shatner in this new version of the Star Trek timeline.
The Toronto Sun spoke with J.J. Abrams, who remained on as a producer on Star Trek Beyond while Justin Lin took over as director. The producer revealed that he has heard several pitches throughout the years about how to bring William Shatner back into this timeline, but nothing has worked so far. Here's what he had to say.
"Obviously it's Star Trek, nearly anything is possible. There's the fairly simple notion that on the day Kirk was born another timeline began. But in the other timeline, Kirk died onscreen (in Generations). I don't know how he would come back unless we went into this other reality and we did a timeline and reality jump. In all the years we've been working on this, I've yet to hear a pitch that didn't sound too contorted and contrived for an audience to swallow. And I've talked to him (Shatner) about it. If Kirk had lived there'd be an answer. But there's something about his having died that makes it impossible."
As you may well know, William Shatner has been quite outspoken in the past about not being cast in any of the reboot movies. At one point, when J.J. Abrams signed on to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Shatner even called the filmmaker a "franchise pig," saying he thinks that the filmmaker not casting him yet is "foolhardy." Still, J.J. Abrams did say that "anything is possible," so perhaps we may see William Shatner's Captain Kirk in the future.
It's also worth noting that, just a few days ago, Paramount Pictures confirmed that Star Trek 4 is happening, with Chris Hemsworth, who made his feature film debut in the first Star Trek as James Tiberius Kirk's father, George Kirk, set to return in this sequel. George Kirk died in the opening scenes of the first Star Trek reboot, but in Star Trek 4, he will reportedly reunite with his son James Kirk. It's clear that there will certainly be some sort of time travel element in Star Trek 4, which could alter the current timelines and open the door for William Shatner to be cast as a future version of Captain Kirk, much like how Leonard Nimoy was portrayed as a future version of Spock.
Still, we don't exactly know how the time travel elements of this story will play out yet, but hopefully we'll learn more soon. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Karl Urban are expected to return, with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay set to write the screenplay for this new Star Trek sequel. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. We'll keep you posted with any updates about William Shatner's future in the Star Trek franchise as soon as we have more information.

Chekov Won’t Be Recast For Star Trek 4

Chekov won’t be recast for Star Trek 4 after the passing of Anton Yelchin.

A fantastic behind the scenes look at the making of Star Trek Beyond with some great Anton Yelchin moments.
We know that it’s almost certain that a fourth Kelvin timeline Star Trek movie will be made. The reviews from Star Trek Beyond have been overwhelmingly positive so far and Star Trek is more popular than ever with the hype surrounding the franchises 50th anniversary in September and a new CBS Star Trek series coming in January 2017.
We also know that Simon Pegg would be happy to be on board as the writer of Star Trek 4 and there is a possibility that Chris Hemsworth will return as George Kirk. Star Trek Beyond hasn’t even come out in America yet and we already know quite a lot about Star Trek 4.
Now we also know that Chekov will not appear in Star Trek 4. Since Anton Yelchin’s passing there has been debate about whether or not Chekov would be recast, and the answer is that he will not be.
JJ Abrams told the Toronto Sun that there was no replacing Anton Yelchin.
“I would say there’s no replacing him, there’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”
This is obviously the right call.  Yelchin made Chekov a beloved character in the hearts of moviegoers again, it’s best to move on in a respectful way.

Star Trek 4 may return Trek to original timeline

Here’s our theory on how Star Trek 4 may return Star Trek to its original timeline.

Star Trek 4 has officially been announced, three days before the US premiere of Star Trek Beyond.

SPOILER WARNING: These are my theories about Star Trek 4, but who knows I could be right, so proceed with caution just in case.

The Star Trek fanbase has been split over the J.J. Abrams Trek movies since they were announced, but no matter your stance on the Kelvin timeline movies they may be about to go back to the original prime Star Trek timeline.
We know now that Star Trek 4 is offical and that Chris Hemsworth will be returning as George Kirk. Now George Kirk could return to Star Trek in a Captain Kirk flashback, but he could also be returning to Trek due to time travel.
If George Kirk is teaming up with James T. Kirk due to time travel it means the entire timeline is up for grabs once again. In the original prime timeline Kirk’s dad was on the Kelvin, but either the Kelvin wasn’t destroyed, or he got off the ship before it was. We know this because Kirk’s dad lived to see him become captain of the Enterprise.
Could some mysterious force have caused the Hobus star to go supernova and destory Romulus in the first place? That supernova eventually caused Spock and Nero to end up traveling back in time and resulted in the destruction of Vulcan and the Kelvin. If this evil force [cough]Borg[cough] was trying to kill Kirk why not kill him on the Kelvin before he’s even born?
Without Kirk the Klingons and Federation might have stayed at war, and the Federation might have lost that war. Perhaps this future evil force [cough]Borg[cough] believes they can conquer the Klingons, but not the Federation. Of course it could also be the Klingons themselves, we haven’t seen them as the bad guys in the Kelvin timeline yet.

If James and George Kirk foil this evil force and stop them from making the Hobus star go supernova it would reset the Star Trek timeline back to the original prime timeline. This means the Kelvin timeline films would be cannon, but would stand apart from the rest of Trek.
Paramount only has contracts with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto for one more film. This theory would wrap up this set of Star Trek movies in a nice neat bow. It would also allow Paramount to move on and possible make movies with the cast of CBS’ new Star Trek series without timeline problems.
Maybe this is how all the Kelvin vs Prime timeline drama gets resolved, or maybe it’s not remotely correct, we will just have to wait for Star Trek 4 to find out!

Star Trek 4 Confirmed by J.J. Abrams, Chris Hemsworth May Return

J.J. Abrams hints that Star Trek 4 may be announced very soon, with Chris Hemsworth's character possibly returning from the 2009 reboot.

The next big summer blockbuster on everyone's list is Star Trek Beyond, which is due out in theaters everywhere next week, after it makes its world premiere at San Diego Comic Con on July 20. That being the case, Paramount is currently pushing the movie and the creative team behind it has been making the rounds doing press for it, including producer J.J. Abrams. According to Abrams, plans are already underway for a fourth installment of the current Star Trek franchise, even though Beyond has yet to be released.
Collider is reporting that Abrams, who directed the first two installments of the rebooted Star Trek, already has plans for Star Trek 4 in the works. The news came from a press conference for Star Trek Beyond that Abrams took part in, and he seemed very optimistic about the possibility for a Star Trek 4. Here is what he had to say.
""Yes, and there's something that hopefully we're figuratively minutes away from talking about. The answer is 100% yes, and it's incredibly exciting."
It may seem a bit forward to already be discussing a fourth Star Trek installment when most people haven't even seen Star Trek Beyond yet, but Paramount clearly has confidence in the movie, as they probably should. Early reactions to the third installment, directed by Justin Lin this time around, have been very positive. Not to mention that the previous entries in this new J.J. Abrams reboot have made an awful lot of money at the box office, and have been generally well received by critics. Paramount will probably wait until at least after the opening weekend numbers and reviews come in to give a green light to the project, but it seems very likely at this point, especially given Abrams enthusiasm.
As for what Star Trek 4 could possibly be about? Well, we don't know a whole lot, especially considering we don't know what happens in Star Trek Beyond yet, but another report gives us a clue as to what Abrams has in mind. Reporter Scott Mantz took to his personal Twitter account today after sitting down with Abarms to give us a juicy bit about Star Trek 4. According to his Tweet, it looks like we may be seeing Chris Hemsworth return to the franchise, after his brief but memorable part in the 2009 Star Trek.
"BREAKING!! #JJAbrams confirms to me that a 4th #StarTrek movie will bring together #ChrisPine & #ChrisHemsworth!!"

In the opening sequence of J.J. Abrams first Star Trek movie, Hemsworth plays George Kick, father of Chris Pine's James T. Kirk. Hemsworth is killed during a Romulan attack on his ship, the U.S.S. Kelvin, as he heroically stays behind in order to save as many of his crew members as possible. That being the case, they would definitely have to play with time travel, or something of the like, in order to bring back George Kirk. But in the world of Star Trek that isn't at all a far reach. Not to mention that Hemsworth has become a much bigger star since he first played the part in 2009, so Paramount would likely be motivated to get him on board, if they could work it out in the story.
Abrams had to leave the director's chair for Star Trek Beyond, because he was quite busy making Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which seemed like it panned out reasonably well for him. It is possible that he could step back in if he wanted to, being that his schedule, though still crazy, is free enough for him to do it. But it is also very possible that if Beyond does well and is well received that Justin Lin could just as likely be back for round two. We will just have to wait and see, but the prospect is indeed exciting. Star Trek 3 opens in theaters on July 22.

Star Trek cast dedicate film to Anton Yelchin

The 27-year-old actor died from "blunt traumatic asphyxia" in a freak accident at his Los Angeles home last month when his car rolled backward and trapped him against his gate and his Star Trek co-star admits the whole cast of their upcoming movie Star Trek Beyond are finding it "hard" to promote the film while mourning their friend.
However, they have realised the best way to deal with the situation is to make the movie "about Anton".

He told Magic Radio: "He should still be here, but we have to make this about Anton now. And we talked about how hard it was gonna be to get out there and bang the drum for this movie when we've lost one of our family.
"But for his sake and for his memory we're gonna make it. It's something that we just now have to contend with."
Fellow Star Trek star Zachary Quinto recently described Anton's passing as a "devastating loss".

He said: "Beautiful, beautiful guy. I don't even know how to talk about it. We already knew this was going to be a bittersweet experience as a result of the loss of Leonard (Nimoy, who died in February 2015). But this has been absolutely devastating for all of us. I think our goal just has to be to celebrate his incredible life and honour him. It was a terrible loss, not only to us but to audiences and the industry."

Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience' at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum: A sneak peek

Trekkies, rejoice!
You can now fulfill your lifelong dream of joining the Starfleet Academy as a cadet at the new "Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience," which opens at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on July 9.
To commemorate the franchise’s 50th anniversary, The Intrepid museum will also host “Star Trek” movie nights, summer camps, astronomy nights and “operation slumbers” (overnight museum stays) throughout the summer. The Paley Center for Media will also showcase the original 2-D and 3-D art exhibit, “Star Trek: 50 Artists. 50 Years.”
The "Starfleet Academy Experience," produced by EMS Entertainment in collaboration with the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, features a series of interactive tasks to help you navigate the academy’s recruitment process.
Scroll down for a sneak peek of the academy.

Your first task as a Starfleet cadet will be a recruitment quiz, which asks a series of five questions that are a cinch for Trekkies. For almost every activity, you'll need to scan the RFID bracelet on top of the command division insignia so that your results from each activity will be temporarily saved and emailed to you. Talk about wearable technology.

Mike Massimino, 53, a former NASA astronaut and current adviser for the Intrepid museum's space programs, said that some of his first memories of television was of "Star Trek." He would watch the show with his brother on Friday nights in the '60s and then he'd watch the reruns later.
"I'm more of the original 'Star Trek' guy," said Massimino, who went on two space shuttle missions to the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002 and 2009.
When the 2009 "Star Trek" movie was released on May 8, Massimino was getting ready for his second flight three days later.
"NASA reached out to Paramount and they were like, 'Oh, the astronauts aren't going to be able to watch your movie. They'll be in space,'" Massimino recalled. "So they signed an agreement to get us a copy ... so we actually watched the movie as a crew on board."

Other innovative technologies from "Star Trek" include Leap Motion, planet projection mapping and a Medical Tricorder table with RFID sensors.
Takei told amNewYork that "Star Trek" is all about humans finding confidence in their ability to be creative and inventive, "to solve problems, to innovate, to research and put seeming opposites together."
"[It's about] this planet here, with people of many different races, cultures, fates, experiences, backgrounds coming together despite the differences, and seeing the differences as part of our strength and innovating together, inventing together, and boldly going where no one has gone before," Takei said with a chuckle.

The Inner Light” Aired 24 Years Ago Today

One of the most iconic episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation “The Inner Light” aired for the first time twenty four years ago tonight.

Look out Taylor Swift, because Sir Patrick Stewart’s country music album sold so fast it went on backorder in under 24 hours!
“The Inner Light” broke the mold for Star Trek: The Next Generation in a lot of ways. During the episode a probe takes control of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and causes the Enterprise’s captain to think that he’s a citizen of a dying planet called Kataan.
What was great about “The Inner Light” was that it explored the death of a people and it did it in a unique way. Instead of relying on a plot that involved the Enterprise trying to save a world we were given a planet that had no hope of being saved.
I was always fascinated with the idea that this civilization chose to send a probe to tell their story. I don’t know if humanity would be able to make the call that we needed to tell our story to someone out there. I really feel like we would just tear ourselves apart right to the end.
This was an incredible episode and if you want to know more about it you should check out the article it’s writer Morgan Gendel wrote for Star Trek.com. It’s an incredible read and really lets you see how this TNG classic was created.
