Star Trek - The Ultimate Film Tribute (HD)

Star Trek History Revealed In '366 Project'

Roddenberry Entertainment to release never-before-seen memorabilia in 2016

Roddenberry Entertainment is releasing parts of its archives containing never-before-seen Star Trek memorabilia throughout 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the sci-fi franchise.
Titled “The 366 Project," the initiative will feature one piece of Trek history -- rare photos, memos, script pages, documents -- posted to Roddenberry Entertainment’s Facebook page each day beginning Jan. 1. In total, 366 pieces will be highlighted, including three bonus items shown below.
"We're really excited to announce as part of the Roddenberry Star Trek 50th Anniversary, we are opening the vault on never-before-seen photos, artwork and media," said Roddenberry Entertainment in a statement on its Facebook page. "We hope you'll join us in celebrating a man named Gene, his visions and concepts -- that were so much more than just a show … they were a philosophy that became a way of life.
"Fifty years later, the community lives on, right here. And with 'The 366 Project.'"
Star Trek's 50th anniversary marks an increasingly busy time for the franchise. "Star Trek: Beyond," from director Justin Lin ("Fast & Furious 6," "Scorpion"), will warp into theaters July 22. Following that, a major convention is planned in Las Vegas in August, William Shatner will host an official Star Trek cruise in January of 2017 and a new television series from CBS is on the way.
Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" made its television debut Sept. 8, 1966 on NBC.

A draft of the opening narration for the "Star Trek" television series. It reads: “This is the story of the United Space Ship Enterprise. Assigned a five year patrol of our galaxy, the giant starship visits Earth colonies, regulates commerce, and explores strange new worlds and civilizations. These are its voyages … and its adventures.”

Mulgrew On New Trek Series And Work Balance

Kate Mulgrew has some thoughts on what fans should see regarding the casting in the new Star Trek series, set to air in 2017, and on balancing work and personal life.
Mulgrew is in favor of diversity, but also curious as to the sex of the next Star Trek captain. “There has not been an LGBT Captain,” she said. “There are an infinity of things they haven’t had. But I’ll be curious to see if they choose a man or a woman. I think I wouldn’t mind a bit if I — well, I’m not even going to tell you that, that’s selfish. I’m eating my words, eating them! It’s just kind of nice being the only female Captain to date.”
The actress hopes that the next actor or actress to take on the role has an easier time balancing both a personal and a professional life, something that she found to be difficult during her time as Janeway. “I had two little children at home, so I was in a constant state of conflict,” she said. “How do I get to them? What’s going on? How do I assuage their fears? How do I balance all of this? I need to be as every good a mother as I am an actress. It was very difficult.
“I played Captain Janeway in the era that had not resolved the conflicts surrounding mothers and work.”
Mulgrew believes that it’s easier to find that balance today, but there is still room for improvement. “It’s a new day in television,” she said. “It’s slow-going. I’m not gonna be foolish about it. It’s still a boy’s club. But this must change, out of necessity.”

Star Trek Beyond Trailer to Arrive with Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Star Trek Beyond trailer is set to arrive with The Force Awakens.

The Star Trek Beyond trailer is set to arrive before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in theaters December 18

Arguably the two most popular entries in the science fiction genre, Star Trek and Star Wars will be coming together in theaters December 18. According to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, the Star Trek Beyond trailer will debut before screenings of J.J. Abrams’ much anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Of course, Abrams directed the last two Star Trek feature films and his Bad Robot is producing Star Trek Beyond.
The same trade article also suggests that The Force Awakens will deliver trailers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Independence Day: Resurgence and X-Men: Apocalypse. Other potential candidates include The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War and Finding Dory.
Star Trek Beyond is set to feature the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho along with new roles for Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella and Joe Taslim. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the third film in the rebooted franchise with four time Fast and Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin directing from a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung.
Star Trek Beyond will hit regular theaters and IMAX on July 22, 2016. That’s just over a month before the franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary. Although it wasn’t the first episode produced, “The Man Trap” was the first Star Trek episode to be broadcast and it hit network television September 8, 1966.
Which trailer are you most excited to see before The Force Awakens? Is there anything special you want to see revealed in the Star Trek Beyond trailer? Let us know in the comments below!

Another glowing Borg Cube!

Just days after revealing their paper lantern Borg Cube, ThinkGeek are back with another glowing illuminated cube. This one, which they describe as a "glowing chair", has a bit more to offer though: A more robust plastic build, the fifteen-and-a-half inch Borg Cube light is powered by an internal battery (which lasts for eight hours), so it can be placed where-ever you see fit, and is strong enough to sit on, or use as a foot-stall, as well as being a light source. While you would surely only ever want it to glow green, it can also be remotely controlled to glow in sixteen different colours, at different brightness levels, and can even strobe or fade between colours - Perfect for your next Borg disco...

If you like you're glowing cubes, check out my Borg Cube model list, which including this latest release, features no less than seven different Borg Cube models with some sort of illumination feature!

Jean Luc Picard in Paris and the French people

Neca's new Bat'leth

Are you a Klingon with a soft side? Then you might want to arm yourself with Neca's new bat'leth prop replica, a full-size reproduction of the iconic prop, which is made of friendly safe foam.

Here's how Neca describe it:
Add extra authenticity to your costume with this soft foam replica of the most honorable weapon of all, the Klingon Bat’leth!

Modeled on an actual prop used on screen in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the foam construction makes it perfectly safe — yet the detailed paint deco is so realistic you may mistake it for a lock of Kahless’ own hair dipped in lava and twisted into a weapon to make empires tremble. Measures a massive 4 feet long.
Neca expect to ship this from March, although Entertainment Earth are feeling a bit more conservative, with their pre-order anticipating it will arrive in April.

Legacy Of Spock Comic

Next year, a new comic series will feature Spock (original) and New Vulcan.
The story will cover four issues, and focus on the older Spock and the “ten Vulcans left after the homeworld is destroyed.”
The series is a “reflection and celebration of Nimoy Spock for fans,” said writer Mike Johnson.
Legacy of Spock will make its debut in March, and will wrap up right before Star Trek Beyond is released.

New Star Trek TV series coming in 2017 to CBS' streaming service (update)

Writer/producer Alex Kurtzman is developing a Star Trek television show, reports The Hollywood Reporter. It would return the venerable science fiction franchise to its original medium, television, for the first time in a decade.
Kurtzman co-wrote and served as producer of the reboot-via-time-travel film Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness, its less-than-well-received sequel. He is not involved in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, which many hope will represent a return to form for the franchise.
Kurtzman's adaptation, which will be produced by CBS, is currently looking for a writer. Progress on a new Star Trek television show has been slow in part due to rights disputes following the Viacom/CBS merger. The Hollywood Reporter says that "a formal announcement with additional details is expected to come later this morning."
Update: And that formal announcement has some big news: Star Trek will boldly go into the realm of digital distribution in January 2017.
"The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network," the statement reads. "The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network's digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service." This will make the series the first original content for CBS' $5.99/month streaming service, CBS All Access. Internationally, the series will be distributed "concurrently for television and multiple platforms."

The announcement also notes that the new series is "not related" to Star Trek Beyond, likely for rights reasons. In the Viacom/CBS merger, CBS absorbed Paramount's television properties, while Paramount Pictures retained film rights to Star Trek.
To sum up: Star Trek will return to television for a series preview, and it seems like the series will be available only through CBS All Access, CBS' subscription-based streaming service. A price of $6 per month certainly seems steep for a single television show, and CBS touting the presence of every other episode of every Star Trek television series on the service isn't much of a balm. Potential viewers likely have existing subscriptions with more popular streaming services, such as Netflix, that also have all of those episodes.
Then again, the return of Star Trek to the format of a serial television drama for the first time in 10 years — and just in time for the series' 50th anniversary — may be the two-ton gorilla of digital content.

How Titanic's Music (almost) Influenced Insurrection

Released a year before Star Trek: Insurrection, James Cameron’s Titanic became a celebrated and successful motion picture event. Part of its power was certainly due to its music under the composition and direction of James Horner (composer of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock). An especially poignant use of music in the film was Horner’s arrangement of Sarah Flower Adams’ hymn “Nearer, My God, To Thee,” performed by I Salonisti. The ship’s band chooses to stay behind and plays the song to calm the passengers.

With filming set to begin during Spring of 1998, specific details about Star Trek: Insurrection’s new cultures, most especially the Ba’ku, were being still being imagined and reimagined when Titanic premiered. Even before Titanic was in theaters, the Insurrection creative team had already discussed the idea that music would play an important role in helping to define the Ba’ku, and more importantly, serve as an emotional connection between the audience and the agricultural and peaceful artisan community. Some of the ideas included that of director Jonathan Frakes, who had previously suggested that Jean-Luc Picard’s Ressikan flute, introduced in "The Inner Light” and making appearances in the episode “Lessons” and – eventually - the film Star Trek Nemesis, be utilized to help make the musical connection.

About three weeks after Titanic’s premiere, Insurrection’s screenwriter, and one of Star Trek’s most-talented and important producers, writers and creators, Michael Piller, sent a memo (dated January 20, 1998). He wrote about the emotional scene in Titanic when the violin player stays behind, followed by his fellow players, as the ship sinks. The scene inspired Piller to think about the role of music in the upcoming Trek production. Piller suggests in the memo that some kind of Ba’ku instrument like chimes perhaps be introduced during the scene when Picard first beams to planet’s surface to “rescue” the not-quite Starfleet hostages. The instrument and musician could then become an emotional touchstone that the film returns to occasionally. Piller cautions that whatever instrument is created, it must be portable so that it could be believable carried into the mountains during the evacuation. Piller believed that by having Ba’ku musicians featured, it would provide an emotional connection to the extras who evacuate along with the primary characters.

Eventually, the idea of using a Ba’ku version of the Titanic musicians was never fully realized. The film instead focuses on a variety of other kinds of Ba’ku artistic endeavors, from blacksmithing to break-making. The evacuation scene does use big chimes/gongs to sound the alarm, as Piller suggests in his January 20th memo, but that is mostly the extent of the musical elements of the Ba’ku that are given primary focus. (As an aside, that doesn’t limit the power of the Ba’ku evacuation scene as filmed and edited because Jerry Goldsmith’s music, Herman Zimmerman’s village designs, Jonathan Frakes’ direction, the special effects, stunts, and acting all combined to create a visually dynamic, original and exciting sequence).

However, there is a Titanic-band of sorts featured in Insurrection – during the diplomatic reception with the Evora onboard the U.S.S. Enterprise E at the start of the film, the audience is treated to classical music performed by a small Starfleet orchestra that gets quite a few close-ups. Additionally, Earth music makes another appearance when Picard, Worf, and Data sing Gilbert and Sullivan. Picard even does a little dance to “Make Over Mambo” from composer Alan Silvestri. The inclusion of this music in Insurrection - from “Piano Sonata No. 8 “Pathetique”, 1st movement” by Beethoven to “A British Tar” - demonstrates how using real-world music in Star Trek’s futuristic settings connects the audience emotionally to the characters.
