Angela Bassett In TV Trek? Not So Fast

Actress shoots down weak rumors she'll star in CBS All Access series

Fans were hoping they might be able to draft Emmy-nominated actress Angela Bassett into the new Star Trek series. But in reality, even if Bassett wanted to do it, she's just too busy.
"That's thrilling, that is very nice," Bassett recently told E! Online. "But how am I going to do that and 'American Horror'? How is that going to work?"
Bassett is referring to "American Horror Story," which she's already earned two Emmy nominations in 2014 and 2015. She also appeared in the most recent season of the series, "American Horror Story: Hotel," and is expected to return for a fourth season as well.
Talk of Bassett joining the series was actually fueled by a 2013 interview new showrunner Bryan Fuller gave to Den of Geek, where he shared what his dream Star Trek scenario would be.
"I would love to do something on the (USS) Reliant," Fuller said at the time. "I want Angela Lansbury ... not Lansbury. I want Angela Bassett to be the captain, that's who I would love to have. You know, Capt. Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson. I would love to do that version of the show, but that's in the future to be told."
Fuller had been pushing to do a new Star Trek series for a number of years since making his mark in critically acclaimed series that include "Dead Like Me," "Pushing Daisies," and most recently, "Hannibal." Fuller got his big break in Star Trek, first with "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," and later "Star Trek: Voyager."
Bassett, who also earned an Oscar nomination for playing Tina Turner in 1993's "What's Love Got to Do With It," seemed flattered by the suggestion, however. Just that she can't be in too many places at once.
"You think I'm super woman," Bassett said jokingly.
E! had caught up to Bassett on the red carpet of "Underground," the new series premiering March 9 on WGN America.
The new Star Trek series is set to premiere on the paid streaming service CBS All Access next January, and includes the production team of Fuller, Alex Kurtzman, Nicholas Meyer, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.
Casting announcements aren't expected until the summer.
